On Fandom Art
I think, no, I *know* there are people out there who don't realize that accepting money for fanart (digital photomanipulations featuring someone else's photography, not original drawings*) is just like accepting money for fanfic. And just in case there needs to be clarification, it's W-R-O-N-G. Those photographs do not belong to you. Those brushes do not belong to you, those textures do not belong to you, etc... Do it for charity, do it for the children, the animals, but do not do it for money. It's tacky, it's wanky. Remember that chick who wanted to get paid to sit on her ass all day and finish her fic? It's like that.
If you want to get paid for photomanipulations, join DeviantArt and browse some of the awesome stuff there. Check out some of the stock models. Some of them will let you use their photogs commercially, as will some of the stock photographers as long as you follow their terms. Stock.xchng is another wonderful, mostly free, stock site. Again, just follow the photographers terms.
Um, I think that's it. Now go make something pretty.
ETA: I would like to make an addendum - I am well aware that quite a few of us do in fact, make our own brushes and textures, but I think I am safe in saying that the majority of us borrow from other sources.
*ETA 2: Please note that I am only referring to digital photomanipulations using photography, brushes, and textures, NOT original drawings done by hand or digitally. Thank you jlh.
ETA 3: In reading some posts in various journals, there seems to be some confusion as to what a photomanipulation encompasses. It is not just pasting Sarah Michelle Gellar's head onto Kiera Knightly's Body. It is photo editing. This is an example of photomanipulation. No one's "hed iz pasted" on.
